If someone want to find an example of encouring religious amity, a small village practising an exclusive tradition of exchanging greetings between Hindus & Muslims islams before readying in the Tamil new year 2013.
Hindus of 5 hamlets close to Thumbaipatti village close to Melur 30 km from here gather before the domestic mosque, where sr Muslims offer them sandalwood paste & Kum Kum. The village accountant then calls a person from every community to get betel leaves & Arecanut offered by them.
Just after getting the Betel leaves & Arecanut make the Hindus step into the new year 2013 and also commence the ceremonial agricultural operation of “1st tilling of the land”
The ritual learned from time immemorial is known as “Betel festival” told Syed Basha a village senior Muslim.
The village leader K Dharmar told the aim of doing this custom is to stress on harmonious living of the 2 communities.
